Unlike some other health systems, the NHS was not overwhelmed during the first wave of the Covid-19 crisis, but the virus has exposed many shortcomings in our systems. While our treatment of Covid patients has improved dramatically, thanks to treatments developed in the NHS, the UK is still trailing in some aspects of its handling of the virus, including the slow rollout of a test, trace and isolate scheme to deal with infections in real time. And as the winter months loom large how can the NHS deal with a resurgence of the virus while providing other services. As we seek to reset and rebuild the NHS and health quangos, what lessons can we take away from our responses to Covid-19 so far; and what shortcomings must be addressed to make the UK a leader in preparing for pandemics once more?
